War

It is well that war is so terrible, otherwise we would grow too fond of it.

This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience.

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the houses of its children.

Probably no nation is rich enough to pay for both war and education.

It would now be technically possible to unify the world, abolish war and poverty altogether, if men desired their own happiness more than the misery of their enemies.

A skillful warior strikes a decisive blow and stops. He does not continue his attack to assert his mastery. He will strike the blow, but be on guard against being vain or arrogant over his success. He strikes it as a matter of necessity, but not from a wish of mastery.

Supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting.

When one by force subdues men, they do not submit to him in their heart. They submit because their strength is not adequate to resist. When one subdues men by virtue in their heart's core, they are pleased and submit sincerely.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

Never contend with a man who has nothing to lose.
