Learning & Education

Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young.

Every idea is a source of life and light which animates and illuminates the words, facts, examples and emotions that are dead, or deadly, and dark without them.

Freethinkers are those who are willing to use their minds without prejudice and without fearing to understand things that clash with their own customs, privileges, or beliefs.

Reading furnishes the mind only with materials for knowledge. It is thinking that makes what we read truly ours.

We must find out truth for ourselves.

The greatest intellectual capacities are only found in connection with a vehement and passionate will.

The chief cause of human error is to be found in prejudices picked up in childhood.

Education is a weapon whose effect depends on who holds it in his hands and at whom it is aimed.

All the value of education rests in respect for the physical, intellectual, and moral will of the child.

The school is primarily a social institution.

Education is a regulation of the process of coming to share in the social consciousness.

All education proceeds by the participation of the individual in the social consciousness of the race.

Education, therefore, is a process of living and not a preparation for future living.

Education is the fundamental method of social progress and reform.

To me the sole hope of human salvation lies in teaching.

Real education consists in drawing the best out of yourself. What better book can there be than the book of humanity.

Reason is man's highest gift, the only prerogative that essentially distinguishes him from the lower animals.

By reason only can we attain to a correct knowledge of the world and a solution of its great problems.

Reason means facing life, and its facts.

Overvalued reason has this in common with political absolutism: under its dominion the individual is pauperized.

The more the critical reason dominates, the more impoverished life becomes; but the more of the unconscious, of the more of myth we are capable of making conscious, the more of life we integrate.

The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all art and science.

There is no education like adversity.

To perceive is to suffer.

Chance favors the trained mind.

The finest hours are not those spent among large groups of people, but in conversation with just a few, in reading great books, in listening to great music, wandering in a forest of giant sequoia, peering into a microscope, unraveling nature's secretes in a laboratory.

A conversation across the table from a wise man is better than years of study of only books.

Books are the voices of the distant and the dead, and make us heirs of the spiritual life of past ages. Quotations, like books, are true levelers. They give to all, who will faithfully use them, the society, the spiritual presence of the best and greatest of our race.

A person possessing an accurate knowledge of and ability to learn from the past, a clear perception of the present and where present trends are leading and the clarity of vision to foresee the results of one's actions is a person who has learned from the past and acts in the present as to ensure an ideal future.

The purpose of education is to replace an empty mind with an open one. - Malcolm Forbes

If you think education is expensive, try ignorance. - Derek Bok

Books do contain a potency of life in them to be as active as that soul was whose progeny they are. - John Milton
